(The Standard P14 31 Dec 2012) The
victim of a gang-rape(輪姦)
and murder that triggered(引起)
an outpouring of grief(流露悲痛) and anger across India
was cremated(火葬) at a private ceremony yesterday, as it
emerged(暴露)
she had planned to marry in February.
The unidentified (身分不明的) 23-year-old, the focus of
nationwide(全國性的) protests
since she was brutally(殘忍地)
attacked on a bus in New Delhi two weeks ago, was cremated away from the public
glare - hours after her body was repatriated (遣返回國) from Singapore.
The funeral pyre (火葬用的柴堆) was lit after traumatized
relatives and friends said their final prayers (祈禱) at
a ceremony (儀式)
in southwestern Delhi, according to mourners (送葬者) who revealed (揭露) she was to wed a
boyfriend who was injured in the same attack.
"They had made all the wedding preparations and had
planned a wedding party in Delhi," said Meena Rai, a close friend and
neighbor. "I really loved this girl. She was the brightest (最開朗的) of all."
Prime Minister (首相) Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi, the leader
of the main ruling Congress party, were at Delhi airport to console (慰問) her parents as they arrived home on a chartered jet with
their daughter's body. After initial (最初的) treatment in a Delhi hospital following the
attack, she was flown to Singapore on Wednesday night. But doctors were unable
to prevent a multiple organ failure (多器官功能衰竭) and she was
pronounced dead in the early hours of Saturday.
Her
death has prompted (促使)
government promises of better protection for women, and deep soul-searching (深思) in a nation where
gang-rapes are a daily occurrence (常有的事)
and sexual harassment (性騷擾)
is routinely dismissed (慣常地不受理) as "Eve- teasing「夏娃的挑逗」."
Waves of protests (抗議狂潮) have
erupted across India (在印度各地爆發) since
the attack on the night of December 16 when the woman was not only repeatedly
raped but also sexually assaulted with
an iron bar, leaving her with terrible intestinal injuries(她的腸受到嚴重的傷害).
Thousands took part in late-night candlelit vigils (晚間的祈禱會) on Saturday after Singh led appeals for calm (懇求平靜下來) to prevent a
repeat of the sometimes violent protests (暴力的抗議).
As police said the six
accused of attacking the victim could face the death penalty, there was a
widespread determination (很多人確定) that
the killing would serve (服刑) as
a tipping point (臨界點)
for how the nation deals with (國家對付) violence against women.
