Rape victim was due to wed

(The Standard P14  31 Dec 2012) The victim of a gang-rape(輪姦) and murder that triggered(引起) an outpouring of grief(流露悲痛) and anger across India was cremated(火葬) at a private ceremony yesterday, as it emerged(暴露) she had planned to marry in February.
The unidentified (身分不明的) 23-year-old, the focus of nationwide(全國性的) protests since she was brutally(殘忍地) attacked on a bus in New Delhi two weeks ago, was cremated away from the public glare - hours after her body was repatriated (遣返回國) from Singapore.
The funeral pyre (火葬用的柴堆) was lit after traumatized relatives and friends said their final prayers (祈禱) at a ceremony (儀式) in southwestern Delhi, according to mourners (送葬者) who revealed (揭露) she was to wed a boyfriend who was injured in the same attack.
"They had made all the wedding preparations and had planned a wedding party in Delhi," said Meena Rai, a close friend and neighbor. "I really loved this girl. She was the brightest (開朗的) of all."
Prime Minister (首相) Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi, the leader of the main ruling Congress party, were at Delhi airport to console (慰問) her parents as they arrived home on a chartered jet with their daughter's body. After initial (最初的) treatment in a Delhi hospital following the attack, she was flown to Singapore on Wednesday night. But doctors were unable to prevent a multiple organ failure (多器官功能衰竭) and she was pronounced dead in the early hours of Saturday.
Her death has prompted (促使) government promises of better protection for women, and deep soul-searching (深思) in a nation where gang-rapes are a daily occurrence (常有的事) and sexual harassment (性騷擾) is routinely dismissed (慣常地不受理) as "Eve- teasing「夏娃的挑逗」."
Waves of protests (抗議狂潮) have erupted across India (印度各地爆發) since the attack on the night of December 16 when the woman was not only repeatedly raped but also sexually assaulted with an iron bar, leaving her with terrible intestinal injuries(腸受到嚴重的傷害).
Thousands took part in late-night candlelit vigils (晚間的祈禱會) on Saturday after Singh led appeals for calm (懇求平靜下來) to prevent a repeat of the sometimes violent protests (暴力的抗議).
As police said the six accused of attacking the victim could face the death penalty, there was a widespread determination (很多人確定) that the killing would serve (服刑) as a tipping point (臨界點) for how the nation deals with (國家對付) violence against women.

Green sales urged to help give wind power a push

(The Standard P.9  31 Dec 2012) An environmental group is calling for (需要) the introduction of green electricity certificates(可再生能源驗證) to encourage the community to share the cost of developing wind power.
Greenpeace said electricity users have to shoulder(承擔) the cost of developing wind energy and certificates will help do this.
The organization hopes the scheme will stabilize electricity tariffs(穩定電價).
It believes the matter should be included in the interim review (年期檢討) of the Scheme of Control Agreement (利潤管制協議) next year.
Last month, Greenpeace commissioned (委託) the University of Hong Kong's Public Opinion Programme (香港大學民意研究計劃) to conduct a survey of 1,031 respondents and compare the results with those of a similar survey carried out by the Census and Statistics Department (政府統計處) in 2003.
It found that 73.9percent welcomed the introduction of

renewable energy as against 63percent nine years ago.

In addition, 71.9percent said they will use renewable energy, a significant (顯著的) increase from 31.9percent in 2003.
The two electricity companies are developing windmills and will study the feasibility (可行性) of such power next year.
Campaigner Argo Yeung Man-yau suggested the

certificates be introduced before review of the
agreement.

"The certificates are issued by the government based on the electricity generated from wind power, and which corporations (有限公司) and individuals(個體戶) can purchase voluntarily(自動地) from the two companies to reduce carbon emissions (碳排放)," Yeung said.
The government should regulate (控制) companies over the sale of 50percent of the certificates in order to obtain (獲得) the permitted (允許) return of 11percent for renewable energy (再生能源), he added.
Senior campaigner Prentice Koo Wai- muk said: "HSBC has been purchasing certificates every year from the United States to fulfill (履行) its goal of reducing carbon emissions. The concept (概念) is like buying securities(保障).

(The Standard P.8  31 Dec 2012) As the world marches toward (邁向) the new year, renowned (有名的) local interior (室內) designer Setmund Leung Kam-biu took time off (抽出一部份時間) to assure revelers (確保尋歡作樂的人) in Kwun Tong that wishes (願望) can indeed come true (實現).

A pre-New Year event at the APM mall saw Leung relate his rags-to- riches story (從赤貧到巨富的故事) and call on (請求) others not to give up on their dreams.
"I was only an office boy and never thought I would be what I am today," said the first Hongkonger to win the international "Red Dot Design Concept" award (德國紅點設計概念奬) in 2006, the equivalent (相等) of an Oscar (奧斯卡金像獎) for the design industry.
His family was poor and his father was a gambler, Leung recalled.
"My father would come home and ask my mother for money. Every relative knew my father was addicted to gambling and would avoid us for fear we would ask to borrow money," the 40-year-old said. "If my mother refused to give him money, he would take out a knife or scissors threatening (威脅) to end his life. My brothers, sisters and I always hid the knives and scissors before he came back."
Leung had just one wish, hoping the day would come when he was respected (受敬重的) and his mother able to hold her head up high (昂起頭做人).
He became an office boy in a design house and was initially a factotum (最初是做雜工) ordered to buy dinner and clean the office.
But he knew he would only be accepted (接受) if he maintained (維持) a good relationship with colleagues and their clients. His efforts paid off (取得成功) and he was promoted (晉升) as a real designer after many of his colleagues left the company.
Then came international design awards, fame and popularity (出名及走紅) for his unconventional focus on fittings like faucets (龍頭).
"It was a coincidence (巧合) that I won the [Red Dot] award," he said.
"One night, I finished a design at about 11pm and found that a design competition was closing at midnight."

He immediately submitted his design. And the rest is history
