(Kar) Good
morning, chairman, adjudicators, our honourable opponents and all fellow
schoolmates.
Thank you
very much for giving me an opportunity here to speak on this debate “Computer
Games do More Harm than Good”. I am speaking for the motion.
Nowadays
computer products are very common in Hong Kong. Many parents can afford
computers for their children. They think that it is useful and convenient for
their kids to surf the Net at home to find related information for studying or
doing their school works. However, some of the parents feel angrily with their
children that the latter spend too much time on playing computer games and they
do their homework carelessly and untidily. Some of them even lose their
interests in studying. They often argue with their children about these
matters.
Some people say
computer games are exciting and interesting for people to play and it is fun.
Besides, they think playing computer games can train people reaction and they
can think fast. I don’t think so. Actually, to spend too much time on playing
computer games can hurt players’ eyes and finger joints.
In my
opinion, once people indulge in playing computer games, they can’t concentrate on
other useful things. They may be unable to manage their time properly.
Secondly, if students get addicted to playing computer games, their results may
be getting worse and worse. If they get poor results, their parents will be
unhappy and may even punish them for playing computer games. Therefore, it
results in making lots of conflicts or arguments between parents and children,
their relationship will turn sour.
I strongly
believe that computer games do more harm than good. We should advise players
how to use computer in the right way, and how to use it in a correct sitting
posture to avoid suffering from their eye problems and finger joints or having
neck and shoulders problems.
Teachers and
parents should remind their students and children to balance both two parts of
their studying and playing computer games. Adults should suggest youngsters to
set up a time schedule for playing computer games. If people spend only limited
time on playing online games, they can have time to do other healthy activities
such as playing ball games, hiking and reading and so on. Those activities are
good for them to develop a precious relationship with their family members and
friends.
This is my presentation. Thank you for your attendance. The motion of today should stand.
