Lawmaker calls for limiting number of mainland visitors

議員呼籲限制 內地旅客訪港

(Metro Daily P.25  15 Feb 2013) Democratic party legislator James To has called for a cap (設置上限) on the number of mainland tourists coming to the territory.

He said the large numbers of visitors were affecting the daily lives of local residents.

His comments came after big crowds over the Lunar New Year holiday forced Ocean Park to suspend (暫停) the sale of tickets for two days in a row.

An estimated (估計) 380,000 visitors cross the border during the first three days of the Lunar New Year.
However, speaking on an RTHK radio programme, another lawmaker, Starry Lee, who is also a member of the Executive Council (行政會議), said it was not practical (實際的) to limit the number of visitors because they were already in possession (擁有) of travel documents.

She believed a mechanism (機制) should be set up instead to control any further relaxation (進一步地放寬) of policies allowing mainlanders to travel to Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, the China National Tourism Administration (中國旅遊局駐海外辦事處) is said to be very concerned about the more than 20 mainland tourists who were forced to sleep in their bus in Hong Kong because no hotel was provided for them.

  1. There are tens of thousands of mainland visitors to travel to HK every day.

Most of them came there for shopping. Maybe the credibility of brands and the quality are better and safer than in the mainland. So I nearly always saw many mainlanders who carried lots of things such as clothes, food and snacks by the MTR to Lo Wu or Lok Ma Chau during in the rush hour.

Although the large numbers of visitors benefit to economic development and can create lot of job opportunities in HK, some of the visitors are parallel traders. It results in the problem of product price which keep surging. It is a two-blade sword. For example, there was recently a shortage of over than one brands of baby milk powder. Many local mothers were not only angry with the parallel traders but also worried their babies that they have no milk powder to feed them.

On the other hand, there are more beggars on the busy streets than the past. To be a beggar that is criminal in HK. The police should arrest them. I think those beggars may be not HongKongers.

If those beggars are mainlanders, the both authorities of HK and the mainland should work together to make a bad list of those visitors that they will be not permitted to visit HK in the future.

In my opinion, it is the time for the both authorities of HK and the mainland to plan a policy for limiting number of mainland visitors.

    It should be:
If those beggars are mainlanders, the both HK and the mainland authorities should work together to put those visitors on a blacklist that they will be not permitted to visit in HK in the next few years.
