Home is sweeter than candy

(The Standard P4  17 Jan 2013) The man - and woman - on the street shrugged off (置之度外) the expected (期待中的) lack of sweeteners(沒有甜頭) in the policy address (施政報告).

Fung Kin-hang, a 41-year-old IT worker, said he never thought the government should give out cash anyway (至少要派錢). "The money should go to the needy," he said.

"The chief executive must not waste government money by handing out HK$6,000 favors (恩惠) to try to please (討好) the people. "And other favors like electricity subsidies (補貼) would definitely (明顯地) go against the trend (趨勢) of environmental protection and energy savings."

But despite (但是儘管) CY Leung's claims to be putting livelihood issues first, Fung said he could not feel his life improving.

"Everything is getting more expensive nowadays and living standards are deteriorating (生活水平質素下降)."

Lo So-ying, a 23-year-old student, pictured left, also did not expect cash handouts.

"Officials had said we should not expect sweeteners as the chief executive would lay down  concrete solutions (制定具體的解決辦法) instead of (代替) wasting resources by handling out allowances to residents," she said.

But after reading the policy address, she fears she will be unable to own a home even 10 years down the road (未來十年). "I am not sure if I could acquire (獲得) one of those 120,000 flats in the coming five years as there will be fierce competition (將會是激烈的競爭)," she said.

A 50-year-old newspaper vendor (報販), pictured right, who did not want to give her name, said: "The queue is too long for single people like me. I just want a stable life (安定的生活)."

  1. Hong Kong is a small place with a huge population. The problem of soaring property price is worrying.

There are lots of families whether those of middle class or the underprivileged that they are hard to afford to pay their high rent. So that those of rack-renters expect they will be benefited by the policy address. However, they are disappointed with it as the Chief Executive, C.Y Leung said, “There are no guarantees for shortening wait for public housing.” Also, after reading the policy address, many homeowners were aggressive in raising prices up to 10% a day.

Even though most of residents are dissatisfied with the policy address, I think the plan of reclamation outside of Victoria Harbour is a good idea. It can create more land for developing and let some industrials move from town to there. Therefore, we can have land to build more multistory buildings. It may ease the property problem.

    1. You are correct. In a society, we must face the problems of scarcity. When Land, Labour or Capital is too little, we have to allocate the so little to the general public. In Hong Kong, we lack of Land. Therefore, the average price of a flat is sky high.
