Baby milk controls expected within days

(Metro daily P.57  31Jan 2013) The government says it will announce measures in the next few days to tackle (著手對付) the shortage of infant formula in parts of Hong Kong.

During an Radio Television Hong Kong radio programme, the Secretary for Food and Health, Ko Wing-man, said the government would examine(檢查) ways of improving the existing hotline services of suppliers, where consumers can order formula by phone for pick-up or delivery.

He said improvements could be made in manning the phone lines. Cross-border goods traders (水貨客) have been buying baby milk formulas in bulk from Hong Kong and selling them on the mainland at a higher price, pushing up prices, leading to shortages. Local residents also blame (指責) these traders for obstructing passageways (阻塞通道) with their heavily laden trolleys.

  1. The majority of local mothers are worried about the shortage of infant formula in parts of HK.

I recently watched a local mother on TV. She was very angry to complain to a parallel trader who was in front of her and could buy 14-can baby milk formula but she could not buy any products of the same brand name. She was concerned about her baby as there was only one can of milk to remain for it.

Last Friday, the government launched into 10 measures to solve the problem such as adult will be exempt two-can limit per person, to provide a government 24 hours hotline for local mother to order baby milk formula and the MTR announced that the weight of luggage from 32 kg to 23 kg limit per person and so on.

I hope these measures will ease the problem of the shortage of milk, to make those of local mothers have a happy Lunar New Year.
